Workshop Module 1
Pinhole & the Simple Camera

Learn the fundamentals of photography, the math behind the physics of light. Build your own pinhole or use our  simple box cameras. Printing paper negatives.

Starting with the basics of photography, using your self-built pinhole camera (or Kodak Box Brownie cameras provided) to make exposures and print the results. This tutorial format class will cover the complexity on the physics of light and the simplicity of building a reusable pinhole camera out of found materials, calculating exposures and making prints. Learn the beginnings of building your own box cameras, hands on, open to novice, intermediate and advanced levels. Each participant will keep their self-made pinhole camera, make and receive their exposed prints. All tools, photo materials and apparatus will be provided. Bring your own cleaned empty food cans too. Only of certain sizes, check in with the tutor.

Learn to shoot & print with large-format cameras & traditional & alternative darkroom printing.

Learn the basics of how to operate large-format cameras, and darkroom printing skills to produce instant prints on black and white silver gelatin photo papers. Take home your own instant handmade portrait prints. Workshop will be conducted in English with the inclusion of Bahasa as well if needed. All materials and equipment provided, photography novice to advanced levels are welcomed. Workshop environment will be conducted according to SOP requirements.

Art printing- Colours from the Sun

Silhouette Portraiture with Lumen printing, getting colours from BW paper.

Bringing colours through various alternative processes to Black & White photo paper. This practical format class includes a special addition of Silhouette Self-Portraiture making, a very early method of making a life-like portrait, popular in the 18th century. Learn the secrets of this alternative process, hands on, open to novice, intermediate and advanced levels. Each participant will make and receive their art print. All materials and apparatus will be provided.

Art printing– Painting in the Tones

Watercolour ink s & other alternative colouring methods on BW prints.

Painting in the Tones, the method of ‘hand-colouring black & white photographs, using simple, water-based, non-toxic medium of ink. This concise workshop explores an old technique of using watercolour inks on monochrome photographs. Open to novice, intermediate and advanced levels. Each participant can choose from the prints provided, hand-colour them and bring the art prints back. All materials and apparatus will be provided.

101 Photobook Publishing

Conceptualising visual narratives, strategising, production, simple mockups.

Realise a simple self-published photobook (or zine) by understanding the intentions through creative processes, balanced with the feasibility of timeline, budgeting for production and marketing plan. This workshop is split into two main parts, a discussion on objectifying the concepts, and a tutorial on materialising a mockup for publication.

A Tale of Two Hills
4 month Mentorship Program 

"A Tale of Two Hills" is an exciting initiative to engage creatively-inclined Malaysians to document images and stories from two of our iconic hill stations - Maxwell Hill and Penang Hill. 

Mentored by highly regarded photographers, researchers, and writers on a project which sets out to capture the rich tapestry of life on these hills - its people, nature, history and sense of place. The work created from this creative journey will be showcased to the public at the end of the programme.

This project is led by Jeffrey Lim who is known for his portrait photography and journey to capture the experience of indigenous peoples in Malaysia, Taiwan and Japan. Teaming up with urban anthropologist Wan Atikah of Penang Harmony Corporation; with previous involvement with GTWHI and ArtsEd, and Liew Suet Fun of Taiping, who is an author of 19 books on environment and human society and also a resident of Maxwells.

In collaboration with MDA, Kanta.Studio presents a series of workshops all about art printing using Black & White silverprints. Starting with Painting in the tones, the method of ‘hand-colouring black & white photographs’, using simple, water-based, non-toxic mediums. This workshop explores several old techniques of how colours were added onto monochrome photographs in the past, one of them learnt from the late Ismail Hashim using inks. This practical format class will cover traditional techniques adapted from box camera practitioners using crepe papers.

(estimation of 80 pages / A5 to 48 pages / A4 size). All mockup tools and materials will be provided.
